MARE ORIENTALE
Κείμενο & φωτογραφίες: Βασίλης Γούσιας
Text & photography by Basilio Wooseas
Looking at the Moon on a peaceful evening, one thinks that the Earth-Moon system is in a perfect gravitational balance. This is far from truth, though. The Moon every now and then librates and shows for a few hours some details on the edge of its unseen side. One such rare libration occurred early in the morning of Oct 21st 2003, when the fabulous Mare Orientale basin was barely visible at the western edge of the Moon. Mare Orientale is Moon’s greatest crater. The weather was tricky above western Greece on that morning and I had to wait with patience by my 4.5 inch Newtonian Celestron roboscope with my Nikon Coolpix ready to shoot in those couple of minutes that the Moon appeared through a small hole in the clouds.
